Commission for Carrickfergus Castle 2019

Commission for Carrickfergus Castle

In late 2019 we were pleased to be invited to design a bespoke hanging decoration for Carrickfergus Castle by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. Our range of Katie Larmour Design embellished Irish Linen souvenirs were already stocked within the castle walls in the official tourist information centre and gift shop. Carrickfergus Castle is a spectacular medieval Norman castle, one of the best preserved in the whole of Ireland, and one might say really quite important. It rests on Belfast Lough, just a short 20 mins drive outside of Belfast City centre, you can even spot it from your way into landing at Belfast City Airport (if you look out for it!). The magnificent stone structure has many angles and I’ve tried to translate its form into textiles using metallic thread to create shade on the walls. I’ve tried to illustrate the rocks that it’s built on with sequins for a bit of sparkle and tiny glass dot beads to soften the contrast, then silver ripples depicting the water that surrounds it. I have such fond memories class visits in primary school, going as an excited young group taking in the sheer scale of it.
